a singular finger

of orange-gold burns
through the tree line off Point Lookout
points straight at me
divides the water into blues
that bring joy to gulls
smiles to the vibrant basking-
green on the west shore
rising over pumpkin frost
licking the cold away
with a silent hush
just south, the mast
of Captain Russell's Skipjack
peaks above the brilliance
of turning leaves

both elbows on the rail
keep my knees off the ground
